This past Saturday we went to Barrier Lake, Kananaskis. We actually went around the same time 2 years ago when Noah was only 7 months old. Not even moving yet! It was busy that time but we were so excited and thought we would come back many more times. Well, 2 years later we came back but with two kids! The last time we were discussing that we would do it differently, park further up and sit somewhere further away from the busy part. So this time we did just that!
Barrier Lake is Located in Canmore Kananaskis which is about an hours drive from Calgary. So we packed up a big picnic lunch, sand toys, tent, towels, picnic rug and hit the road. After getting a 20 pack of tim bits of course! It’s actually a really easy drive and Siena didn’t throw up! Yay! There is a parking area but if you drive a little further up you can park on the side of the highway and walk down a bushy path to a much more quiet area. It’s great!
The kids had the best time splashing around and playing with all the rocks. The water is really cold though so you can’t really stay in for too long, but of course the kids don’t feel the cold so it’s fine for them! Noah gave us a few scares because it does go deep. In one area there is a drop right off the edge. He couldn’t touch the bottom and panicked and did actually go under. He wasn’t far from us, but enough for me to give my best triathlon sprint and swim. Kids, they will always keep you on your toes! It was terrifying but he was fine and learnt his lesson. He actually listed to us and never went in the water without being far from us again!
Barrier Lake is actually a man-made lake. It’s really beautiful! We got there around 11.30am and had a good spot to ourselves. It was starting to pick up as we were leaving, which was around 3.30pm, so I think going earlier is key. You are also avoiding the high temperatures too.
