For the past few months Noah has been a nightmare to put down to sleep of an evening. He would go down perfectly fine without a fight for his naps, but when it came to bed time he would fight us. It was every night without fail, it would take up to 1.5 hrs. We tried a few things to get him to settle and fall asleep. We tried laying with him, sitting on the floor beside him, putting him back into bed without any eye contact or talking to him; super nanny style. Essential oils, warm milk, salt lamp, black out blinds. You name it, we tried it.
This entire time we assumed he needed the day nap, 9 times out of 10 he went down for a nap without an issue. And according to some online research children do not drop naps till they are between 3-5 years of age. Maybe he is? But he is only 2.5 years old. However, our Noah has never really been a child to conform to “normal time lines”. Having said that, I have also heard of a lot of children dropping their naps as early as 2, or before.
Yesterday I gave dropping the nap a go. He started off cranky, it was a little bit of an emotional roller coaster for both of us. But really he wasn’t that bad at all. And the best part…He slept 7-7 and he only got up 3 or 4 times before staying in bed. That is HUGE for us!! He has not slept 7-7 without a fight since we changed him from a cot to a bed.
I’m still not 100% convinced that he is ready to drop his nap, I know I am not ready for him to drop his nap!! But it’s inevitable, he has to drop it eventually so maybe now is the right time for him? If he turns into a big huge mess and obviously needs sleep then we will just go back to the old routine. I have learned that kids are ever evolving and changing, no sooner you get use to one routine, they are ready to move on to another!
If you have already, how did you know your toddler was ready to drop a nap? How do you cope not getting that time to yourself?
